Translation:

A return that not even they themselves expected, Sanity.berlin is a German sympho black metal band with death and power overtones that had been inactive for more than 20 years, and suddenly they return with an EP called "The Beast" that will be released on the 2nd March independently. If you miss that era where symphonic was a little more aggressive, you might probably like this upcoming release. See the review made by our collaborator Yvan, you can find it in the first comment.

Translation of YouTube Transcript:

Hey my friends, we continue with more reviews here on the Retumba Channel. Today we have a band that is around for a long time already. This band is called Sanity, a German symphonic metal band playing a mixture of symphonic black, death and even power metal.

I didn’t know the band before, they released their first album in 1998, but disappeared after their third album in 2001. Suddenly some kind of strange fly bit them and they decided to do new albums. They released an album last year called Revelation and are now launching another one, called The Beast. A comeback after 20 years.

Not many bands return after such a long time with significant releases, not many bands come back at all after 20 years. Or they are stuck with what they did before. There are really very few bands that come up with really new and good stuff. What makes Sanity different? I'm not sure. As musicians they could have learned a lot of things in 20 years, their production could have improved, but honestly, I have not listened to their previous albums, but if you ask me what I heard on EP The Beast, it's a strong EP, it's a powerful EP, despite the running time of only 17 minutes. As I said it combines symphonic styles of black, death and even power metal. This EP feels round. Speaking of symphonic metal, the orchestrations are very well done. These guys bring a certain kind of theatric and dramatic that not many symphonic bands are able to deliver. I mean that singing is more of a dialogue it almost feels like an opera. The orchestrations are very well done and well produced.

Speaking of instruments, the instruments are very well played and the compositions are very well done. Often in symphonic metal the arrangements and orchestra are over present, but here the guitars complement the orchestra, they go from here to there, doing a million things, are not simply there as a reminder of the black metal genre, no, there are so many guitars and riffings and melodies, it feels like they are everywhere. The guitar work features strong death metal rhythms, speedy black metal riffs and melodic power metal licks and of cause guitar solos. So when it comes to guitars, I think they are very well done.

The drums are also quite sophisticated, a type of drums that is rarely heard in symphonic metal. It's extremely powerful and can be compared to drums in the style of Fleshgod Apocalypse or Dimmu Borgir. I really like the vocals too, guttural shouting and screaming, gentle clean voices and loud power and heavy metal vocals. There is something with this band, I like very much, there's a certain blackness in this band, but there's also a certain epic feeling, like the ones you usually get in slightly less extreme genres, let's say heavy or power metal. Listening to the album, I hear influences from early releases of Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Limbonic Art, Bal-Sagoth and other symphonic melodic bands that were defining the genre of death and black metal two decades ago. So surely these guys picked up what they probably heard in those years.

I really could listen to a full album of these guys, it's really a good EP, this EP The Beast.

I think it's a very good EP, and despite the fact that one can hear certain influences in their music, they sound different, in a positive way, they remind me of the symponic black metal of yesteryear, there is this brutality of symphonic black and death metal of yore.

I'll give it an eight. For me it's a very solid eight the EP The Beast. Hopefully Sanity can bring to the table a full album in the future. They are German guys who are coming back after 20 years and are really more relevant than other bands with 17 minutes of an EP. Friends, remember that this new album will be released on March 2. They don't have a record label yet, it’s an independent production. Applause to these guys, I really liked their album, really wait for it, if you are fans of symphonic black and symphonic death, together with epic power metal. Very good guitars, very good drums, good vocals, very good record. Friends, we'll be seeing each other soon, see you later.

« The Beast »

4-track EP (17'39'')

Sympho Black Metal Prog - Germany - released on 02 March 2024

I discovered SANITY, a German band, with their 5-track EP "Revelation", playing a Sympho Death / Black Metal style, with lyrics based on the Bible's Book of Revelation. Boy, it was a discovery! So I was eagerly awaiting the sequel, and it is with much excitement that I made my way through the 18' of these 4 tracks. It features the very same five musicians, all equally passionate about the sequel, which is still inspired by the Bible's book of Revelation, and in particular verses from six of its twenty-two chapters.

On first hearing, it's clear that this new EP sounds more apocalyptic musically and vocally than its predecessor. It's less melodic, with fewer clear-voiced vocal flights and a more pronounced black feel that amplifies the apocalyptic aspect. But it's true that the Bible's Book of Revelation forms the basis of the album, and there's no denying that. All the tracks alternate between screeching Black, deep Death and clear, luminous and wide vocals, creating an opera-like atmosphere on certain passages. Few solos, lots of speedy vocals to keep up with the symphonic music.

"Kingdom" (Chapter 11). Right away, Sympho Black music with alternating screaming Black vocals, then Death over hard-hitting drums, and clear vocals over more subdued music, both melodic. A beautiful musical flight, taking up the track from the beginning is followed by the voice and the black music, over which the Death voice returns, then again this bewitching clear voice. The black vocals continue until the musical finale. Impressive!

"Plagues" (Chapters 15 and 16). This is an uptempo track with clear vocals, followed by Death and Black vocals that linger for longer. There's a lyrical sequence with powerful clean vocals that develop more and more emotion as they get louder, becoming faster and higher. The Death vocals pick up again, with a bell in the background, and the Black vocals dominate once more over a crazy rhythm. The powerful clean vocals take over once more, with a beautiful musicality that carries through to the symphonic finale. Great!

"Babylon" (Chapters 18 and 19). No intro, outright speed, mainly with Black vocals, on a melodic musical line, then alternating Death, majestic clear and Black vocals. Excellent passage with monastic choirs quietly singing "Fallen Babylon" over blasts. A superb contrast between the majestic, controlled choirs and an exhilarating rhythm. We're treated to this twice. The finale features vocals, screams before the EP's first solo, and a reprise of the Black vocals in the chaos. Excellent!

"Gospel" (Chapter 14). First intro, a 18 seconds of break with piano, sound effects and cello, then apocalyptic blast, Death/Black vocals then intense Black on crazy music. No clear vocals on this track. Death vocals over a big rhythm, then Black vocals over a frenzied soundtrack. After the second chorus, there's a good dissonant solo over a crazy rhythm that continues with the Black vocals over symphonic blasts. The track ends with sarcastic laughter. Staggering fury!

A successful follow-up to "Revelation", with a more apocalyptic approach based on Sympho and Black music, giving an almost permanent impression of chaos with the use of three voices: Black, Death and clear. This impressive clear voice provides the epic melody that brings out the emotions. With 'The Beast', SANITY have established themselves as an original band, with their strong convictions and complete mastery of subtle and magical arrangements of various types. A work that will leave a lasting impression on fans of the genre, but also on a wider audience who will discover these four tracks, all as captivating as the five on the previous EP. A must-listen if you don't want to miss out on a masterpiece of Metal music.

SANITY

« The Beast »

EP 4 titres (17’39’’)

Sympho Black Metal Prog – Allemagne - sortie le 02.03.2024

INDEPENDANT / AGAINST PR / SANITY / METAL DEVASTATION RADIO

Sanity Revelation (Independent) 10/10

Straight out of Berlin, we have a huge sound universe that mixes a lot of good things from both black and death metal with symphonic metal's very best tricks! There are bells, violins, synthesizers and chanting choirs all in the right places and it's actually really well done! On top of this, the production is crisp and you don't feel like there is anything missing. In fact, you can hear all the nuances and little quirks to perfection, which makes it the ultimate experience. I've listened to Revelation on my living room stereo with 45-year-old speakers and also on a walk with my headphones on and Sanity sounds damn good everywhere! The five songs on this EP form a concept album about revelations from the Bible - you know, that story with the end of the world and all that stuff, which only makes the songs even cooler! I don't usually give perfect ratings, but in this case it's justified! Go listen to it!

The band Sanity has been active for exactly 30 years: founded in Berlin in the now distant 1994, they have produced four albums, the most recent of which is Revelation. This work was inspired by the Book of Revelation of the Bible, which has always fascinated bands belonging to the heavy metal genre due to it's visionary scope.

In this case, the contents of the book became the ideal backdrop for the band to unleash their zealous dedication towards symphonic metal in its most rough and yet simultaneously passionate form. The quintet’s compositions take place on two different levels, which are perfectly integrated and depict extremely evocative scenarios. One level is characterized by the instrumental component, lofty and elegant; the other presents furious shouting alternated by verses sung with dramatic pathos. This combination is harmonic and well-balanced: the theatrical impact of the work is evocative and fascinating, capable of captivating the listeners on an emotional level as well as awing them with grand and symphonic arrangements.

SANITY: A Symphonic Odyssey Through the Apocalypse

Press release Against PR

Sanity, a symphonic metal band from Germany, has embarked on an ambitious musical journey with their latest EP "Revelation," inspired by the biblical Book of Revelation. The EP's opening track, "Throne," is a testament to the band's creative evolution and their ability to blend diverse musical genres into a cohesive and powerful narrative.

The genesis of "Throne" and the "Revelation" EP dates back to 2001, a period marked by intense creativity for the band. The members' encounters with evangelical Christians in different countries profoundly influenced their musical direction. "Their bible-based message about a living God that offers forgiveness and a place in heaven for free was so radically different from what religion all over the place teaches you".

Sanity's journey in the heavy metal culture of Berlin since the early 90s has been instrumental in shaping their sound. The addition of Bernd Schweda, a death metal guitar legend, to the lineup brought a new dimension to their music. The band successfully merged black metal guitar skills with technical death metal riffings, creating a unique symbiosis. The symphonic elements, influenced by classical composers like Beethoven and Bach, add richness and depth to their compositions. The orchestration process for "Throne" was a meticulous endeavor. Working with Andreas Hilbert from Soundforge Studio, the band achieved a rich, layered sound. They used the Vienna Symphonic Library to add orchestral elements, carefully ensuring that each instrument had room to breathe. The result is a majestic blend of mourning oboes, passionate celli, and heroic choirs, complementing the heavy guitar and drum sections.

"Throne" is a journey through the end times, as envisioned by Sanity. The EP is a unique blend of black and death metal with symphonic elements, offering fans of bands like Arcturus and Rhapsody an epic and immersive listening experience. With "Throne," Sanity has set a new standard in the genre, combining their musical prowess with a profound message, making it a significant addition to the symphonic metal landscape.

Comunicato stampa Against PR

SANITY "Revelation"

EP 5 Songs (22’32’’)

Symphonic Death / Black Metal – Germany - released on 11 February 2023

INDEPENDANT / METAL DEVASTATION RADIO

SANITY, originally from Berlin, had an active first period between 1995 and 2002 with 3 albums. The band returned in 2013 with two members from the previous period, Florian Weishaupt, singer and guitarist in 1995, who has been singer since 2013, and Philipp Weishaupt, drummer initially, then keyboards in 2013 and drummer since 2021. Ludwig Liebsch joined the band in 2013 on bass and switched to guitar in 2021. They were joined by Julius Albe on guitar and Felix Albe on vocals, followed by Silas on bass in 2021. The six musicians worked hard on this new five-track EP, released independently on 11 February 2023. I discovered this band thanks to a new promotional campaign launched by METAL DEVASTATION RADIO.

This EP is a concept album inspired by the Bible's Book of Revelation. Throughout the five tracks, you'll discover Symphonic, Power / Metal, Black / Death oriented music with choirs and a mix of vocals that are shared between Felix, mainly for the growls and Florian, powerful clear voice, and also all other approaches ranging from growls to very high impressive notes, without neglecting the screams. The guitars are imposing and the crazy rhythm part develops an incredible energy.

We start with “Throne”, Florian's soaring vocals remind me of Alexander Osipov from IMPERIAL AGE, and he does this several times throughout the track. Felix is the Death vocalist. With vocals and solo mixed together, it's all about power and Florian is already impressing with his soaring voice. The finale is more melodious, with Death vocals and high-pitched screams.

"Scroll" is more laid-back, with an angsty atmosphere, growl vocals followed by lyrical clean vocals and a second solo in the background. Just before the halfway point, the blast beats kick in, the guitar follows, then the RHAPSODY-style clean vocals explode, alternating with the death vocals. It's scathing and impressive. It's a lovely piano solo for a musical finale.

"Seals' starts off quietly for the first 20 seconds, but the Death vocals quickly develop over a cavalcade of rhythm section over layers of keyboards, with Florian pushing his voice up into the treble. Then comes a magical moment with the highly melodic backing vocals and the Death voice. We take up the verse in a more symphonic vein and once again these majestic choirs, in this gripping melody dressed up with a soaring solo, convey real emotion. Florian's voice remains strong, and he never falters on the huge, melodic finale. What a slap in the face!

"Silence" is a musical interlude with narration by monastic choirs and a large organ.

As for the final utterly devastating track, "Trumpets", you could say we're in for an "apocalypse now", as this masterpiece in SANITY's repertoire features a whole host of dazzling musical aspects with extreme vocals - for here there are no clear voices, only fury. Musically, it's violent, with folk and bombastic passages, intense black with nasal vocals and melodic solos, all blending together in an intense but skillfully controlled general tumult. Halfway through the track, the madness is rampant and everything explodes while remaining melodic with an exceptional solo, and the musical surge continues right through to the finale. Gigantic and impressive!

You won't get away unscathed from listening to these five tracks that make up "Revelation", and you won't be able to resist listening to them again straight away. SANITY are back, and making their mark straight away with intense Symphonic Death/Black Metal music performed by six passionate musicians. This brilliant comeback is cause for celebration, and we hope that the band are working on a follow-up that's just as captivating.

EP Revelation - Track by Track:

1.Throne:

"Throne", the first song on "Revelation" is probably the pinnacle of our creative work of the past 30 years. You will be greeted by a majestic choir, depicting the scores of angels singing in the antechamber of God’s throne room. Then the train hits you in full swing, massive guitars set in, and a pounding, unrelenting drum rhythm framed by a cold choir and growling vocals. This is head-bang material, man! I know that our fans will love the melodic solo passages in the song, the neck-breaking rhythmic passages, and the somber bridge that culminates in a splendor of power metal madness. I could even imagine fans pulling out their lighters and singing along during a concert if you know what I mean. Please watch the official video of “Throne” on YouTube to immerse yourself in the emotional message of the song. "Throne" is a great opening song for "Revelation" due to its multi-faceted arrangement. It sets the stage for "Scroll", the next song.

2.Scroll:

Scroll is an orchestral masterwork. Next to the slowly pounding rhythm guitars, you find pizzicato played by double basses, dramatic violas, and a flute to complement the emotional singing passage culminating in high-pitched trills. We added a lead guitar for the second verse to further expand the musical arrangement. And then, at the height of the drama, a blast of drums, guitars, and intense shouting is unleashed all the while overseen by a serene oboe that is unsoiled by the pure chaos of the pounding war machine underneath. Epic horns and choirs take over as the rhythm shifts to a soothing double bass drum pattern and Florian's Rhapsody of Fire style vocals nurture the long-awaited redemption from all the drama and tension in this song.

3. Seals:

"Seals" is a fantastic track to get to know the EP, the song incorporates all elements that make "Revelation" such an outstanding release for Sanity. As with many songs on past albums, the listener is greeted by a calm, almost folkloric instrumental intro that sets the mood for what’s coming. Then the train hits you in full swing, massive guitars set in, and a pounding, unrelenting drum rhythm framed by a cold choir in major fourth. This is head-bang material, man! The song features neck-damaging riffing in the verse, incredibly powerful shouting, and high-pitched "Priest"-like screaming by our singer Florian in the short bridge. The chorus is uber-epic with its multilayered choir arrangement, the low growling voice, and the wistful horn section and strings in the background. In the second chorus, we even added another melancholic lead guitar on top of it all - talking about emotional overkill. The bridge starts with a heroic acapella passage and when the guitars set in again, it lets you appreciate once more how ultra heavy these have been mixed by Andreas Hilbert from Soundforge Studio. The song concludes with the thickest arrangement on the whole album, wailing lead guitars embedded in comforting strings, longing trumpets, heroic choirs and compelling drum rhythms, and above all the exceptional vocals of Florian that paint a bleak picture of the times to come. Check out our official video of "Seals" on YouTube!

4. Silence:

The fourth song "Silence" is a calm orchestral intermezzo and describes the utter silence in heaven after a quarter of the people have died in epoch-making catastrophes. We found it fitting to arrange this song in a purely classical way to express the atmosphere in God's throne room.

5. Trumpets:

"Trumpets" is a fast-paced melodic masterpiece that leaves you wanting for more, full black/death immersion with growling and shouting vocals. A plethora of melodies and hook lines, rhythms worthy of mosh pits, and fast double bass drum madness are all complemented by majestic orchestra passages of trombones, horns, strings, flutes, trumpets, harpsichord, and choir. What a symphonic metal feast!

EP Revelation - Behind the Artwork:

The album is called Revelation, the lyrics are taken from the biblical "Book of Revelation" (last book of the bible, turn all the way to the end of the bible if you want to find it). The Book of Revelation basically lays out the apocalypse. It’s about the end of the world! And not by any random or man-made natural disaster, no, it is about God judging the world. This judgment is carried out by mighty angels and at the end of it a third of mankind is dead. It is a grim business. Based on this narrative we wanted an angel portrayed that is mighty and powerful surrounded by a multitude of people who all look up to him in apprehension of the coming judgment. It believe it turned out pretty good, didn't it? The artwork was skillfully crafted by Jan Yrlund from https://www.darkgrove.net/.

19-December 2023 Adam McCann· EPs Reviews

Sanity – ‘Revelation’ EP

Straight off the bat, Sanity’s latest EP is of apocalyptic proportions, it lays the fields of Armageddon out for forces of good and evil to do battle. This is presented in a black metal format which leans heavily on melody and symphonic elements to really drag it out of the quagmire of generic black metal. In all honesty, where this EP really excels are the choir arrangements which provide an excellent background for the vocals to soar, bark and growl pulling the listener into their ‘Book of Revelations’ world. This short EP shows that Sanity is continuing to push themselves and hopefully, this sound will result in a long-awaited comeback album. It might be the end of the world, but with this on in the background, you’ll feel fine.

To Discover:
Sanity Unleashes Epicness with "Seals"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9adVATPq-yA

Sanity’s "Seals" from the EP "Revelation" is a sonic rollercoaster, an epic journey that encapsulates everything that makes Sanity stand out. Brace yourself, this song's a wild ride.

Picture this: you start off with this tranquil, almost folk-like intro, setting the mood like a master storyteller. But before you can catch your breath, WHAM! Guitars crash in, drums pound relentlessly, and a chilly choir jumps in. It's a neck-snapping, head-banging extravaganza! The verses deliver riffage that’ll make your neck sore, complemented by powerhouse vocals and some "Priest"-like screams from the incredible Florian. Then, boom! The chorus explodes into an epic multilayered choir, blending growls, wistful horns, strings—talk about an emotional tsunami! And just when you think it couldn't get heavier, bam! A lead guitar kicks in, taking it to another level.

The bridge is a heroic a capella passage that segues into a heavy guitar onslaught, showcasing Andreas Hilbert's wizardry at Soundforge Studio. As the song wraps up, it throws everything at you—wailing guitars, comforting strings, longing trumpets, heroic choirs—painting a picture of impending doom, beautifully bleak yet compelling.

“Offenbarung” als Metal-Symphonie

9. Februar 2023

A pretty tabloid style trailer to a video that is being shown in it's full length during the Mittagsmagazin of the ZDF. At the end Simone's next idea is presented: a biker service with heavy metal concert. This is our show on 27-Aug-2022 in Borkheide! This post polarizes pretty strongly and received a lot of comments and reacrtions! Here is the link to the complete video during the ZDF-Mittagsmagazin: ZDF-Mittagsmagazin Clip 7 - ZDFheute.

"Also, ostsozialisiert bin ich komplett ohne Kirche aufgewachsen. "Was machen wir dann?"

Review of the CD „Schattensymphonie“

Review of the CD „Schattensymphonie“

Kaufen.

CD „Schattensymphonie“ honored as “album of version 15.0”
Review of the CD „Schattensymphonie“

Review of the CD „Nocturnal Poems“

(Pro / 28.12.1999)

Review of the sampler „Äonen der Knechtschaft“ with „Der Knabe im Moor“

Atmospheric Black Metal, obviously with drum computer, dominated by the synths. The lyrics are a poem by the well-known German artist Annette von Droste-Huelshoff. If you listen to this in the right mood and surrounding, the atmosphere can be extremely threatening and intense. Well done.

Review of the CD „Nocturnal Poems“

Review of the CD „Sinister Reflections“

Review of the CD „Nocturnal Poems“
