Sanity: The Beast (ep)
Independent Release, Melodic Black Metal, Sanity, Symphonic Metal
[Belgium original further down]
We need to go back a while in history to reach the year of Sanity's inception: 1995. The band was founded in Berlin, Germany, based on the ideas of Florian and Philipp Weishaupt. When they called it quits in 2002, Sanity’s discography consisted of three full-length albums. However, the duo felt the story of Sanity was not yet complete, and since 2013 they have been active again. Since this restart, the band has released two EPs, with The Beast being the most recent.
Musically, we hear a mix of symphonic metal and melodic black metal—a somewhat peculiar combination, if you ask us. On The Beast, this results in four tracks, each featuring segments we could describe as symphonic metal, as well as rather furious parts where black metal takes center stage. It’s these latter parts, fortunately for us, that dominate the most. Unfortunately, for reasons that are often unclear to us, the band switches abruptly from one moment to another to more symphonic metal sounds. These sections are paired with clean vocals, but in our opinion, the vocalist’s voice is not suited for this style. The typical black metal vocals, on the other hand, we find quite enjoyable.
Why the group chooses to shift between these (sub)genres is unclear to us and doesn’t really resonate. Give us the melodic black metal sound, enriched with symphonic elements, but please don’t alternate between the two (sub)genres, especially when the voice isn’t suited to doing either justice. Sorry, but because of this, Sanity loses a great deal of credibility in our eyes, and as a result, the rating drops significantly.
