I discovered SANITY, a German band, with their 5-track EP "Revelation", playing a Sympho Death / Black Metal style, with lyrics based on the Bible's Book of Revelation. Boy, it was a discovery! So I was eagerly awaiting the sequel, and it is with much excitement that I made my way through the 18' of these 4 tracks. It features the very same five musicians, all equally passionate about the sequel, which is still inspired by the Bible's book of Revelation, and in particular verses from six of its twenty-two chapters.
On first hearing, it's clear that this new EP sounds more apocalyptic musically and vocally than its predecessor. It's less melodic, with fewer clear-voiced vocal flights and a more pronounced black feel that amplifies the apocalyptic aspect. But it's true that the Bible's Book of Revelation forms the basis of the album, and there's no denying that. All the tracks alternate between screeching Black, deep Death and clear, luminous and wide vocals, creating an opera-like atmosphere on certain passages. Few solos, lots of speedy vocals to keep up with the symphonic music.
"Kingdom" (Chapter 11). Right away, Sympho Black music with alternating screaming Black vocals, then Death over hard-hitting drums, and clear vocals over more subdued music, both melodic. A beautiful musical flight, taking up the track from the beginning is followed by the voice and the black music, over which the Death voice returns, then again this bewitching clear voice. The black vocals continue until the musical finale. Impressive!
"Plagues" (Chapters 15 and 16). This is an uptempo track with clear vocals, followed by Death and Black vocals that linger for longer. There's a lyrical sequence with powerful clean vocals that develop more and more emotion as they get louder, becoming faster and higher. The Death vocals pick up again, with a bell in the background, and the Black vocals dominate once more over a crazy rhythm. The powerful clean vocals take over once more, with a beautiful musicality that carries through to the symphonic finale. Great!
"Babylon" (Chapters 18 and 19). No intro, outright speed, mainly with Black vocals, on a melodic musical line, then alternating Death, majestic clear and Black vocals. Excellent passage with monastic choirs quietly singing "Fallen Babylon" over blasts. A superb contrast between the majestic, controlled choirs and an exhilarating rhythm. We're treated to this twice. The finale features vocals, screams before the EP's first solo, and a reprise of the Black vocals in the chaos. Excellent!
"Gospel" (Chapter 14). First intro, a 18 seconds of break with piano, sound effects and cello, then apocalyptic blast, Death/Black vocals then intense Black on crazy music. No clear vocals on this track. Death vocals over a big rhythm, then Black vocals over a frenzied soundtrack. After the second chorus, there's a good dissonant solo over a crazy rhythm that continues with the Black vocals over symphonic blasts. The track ends with sarcastic laughter. Staggering fury!
A successful follow-up to "Revelation", with a more apocalyptic approach based on Sympho and Black music, giving an almost permanent impression of chaos with the use of three voices: Black, Death and clear. This impressive clear voice provides the epic melody that brings out the emotions. With 'The Beast', SANITY have established themselves as an original band, with their strong convictions and complete mastery of subtle and magical arrangements of various types. A work that will leave a lasting impression on fans of the genre, but also on a wider audience who will discover these four tracks, all as captivating as the five on the previous EP. A must-listen if you don't want to miss out on a masterpiece of Metal music.

J’ai découvert SANITY, groupe allemand, avec l’EP 5 titres « Revelation » évoluant dans un registre musical Sympho Death / Black Metal, basé, pour les paroles, sur le livre de l’Apocalypse de la Bible. Et quelle découverte ! J’attendais donc la suite avec une impatience certaine et c’est avec excitation que j’ai parcouru les 18’ de ces 4 titres.
On retrouve les cinq mêmes musiciens, tous aussi passionnés pour la suite toujours inspirée du livre de l’Apocalypse de la Bible et en particulier, de versets tirés de six de ses vingt-deux chapitres.
Après la première écoute, il est certain que ce nouvel EP est plus apocalyptique musicalement et vocalement que le précédent. Moins mélodique car moins d’envolées vocales en voix claire et une orientation black plus marquée qui amplifie cet aspect apocalyptique plus présent. Mais il est vrai que la base du propos est le livre de l’Apocalypse de la Bible, et il n’y a pas tromperie sur ce point. Tous les titres présentent l’alternance de voix Black criarde, Death profonde et claire lumineuse et ample donnant sur certains passages une ambiance opéra. Peu de solo, beaucoup de chant débité speed pour suivre la musique sympho du même acabit.
« Kingdom » (Chapitre 11). Immédiatement, musique Sympho Black avec alternance de voix Black criarde, puis Death, sur batterie bien frappée, et claire, sur musique plus posée, toutes deux mélodiques. Une belle envolée musicale, reprenant la plage du début du titre, s’installe suivie de la voix et de la musique black sur laquelle la voix Death revient puis à nouveau cette voix claire envoûtante. La voix Black reprend jusqu’au final musical. Impressionnant !!
« Plagues » (Chapitres 15 et 16). C’est instantanément speed avec voix claire puis voix Death et Black qui persiste plus longtemps. Surgit un passage lyrique avec voix claire puissante qui développe de plus en plus d’émotions au fur et à mesure qu’elle s’amplifie allant jusqu’au speed en montant dans les aigus. La voix Death reprend, avec cloche en fond sonore, et celle Black à nouveau dominant sur un rythme de folie. La voix claire puissante s’impose de nouveau sur une belle musicalité et ce, jusqu’au final sympho. Grandiose !!
« Babylon » (Chapitre 18 et 19). Pas d’intro, directement speed principalement avec voix Black, sur ligne musicale mélodique puis alternance voix Death, claire majestueuse et Black. Excellent passage avec chœurs monastiques chantant posément « Fallen Babylon » sur blasts. Le contraste, des chœurs majestueux et maîtrisés sur ce rythme excité, est superbe. On a le droit à ce déroulement deux fois. Pour le final, voix, cris avant le premier solo de l’EP, et reprise du chant Black, dans le chaos, seront de la partie. Excellent !!
« Gospel » (Chapitre 14). Première intro, pour 18 secondes d’accalmie avec piano, bruitage et violoncelle, puis sur blasts apocalyptiques, voix Death / Black puis Black intense sur musique folle. Sur ce titre, pas de voix claire. On retrouve la voix Death sur gros rythme puis voix Black sur musique affolante. Après le deuxième refrain, bon solo dissonant sur rythme de folie qui perdure avec la voix Black sur blasts sympho. Le titre se termine par des rires sarcastiques. Fureur ahurissante !!!
Suite réussie de « Revelation » dans une approche plus apocalyptique sur la base d’une musique Sympho et Black donnant une impression quasi permanente de chaos avec l’utilisation des trois voix, Black, Death et claire. Cette voix claire impressionnante apporte la mélodie épique qui fait ressortir des émotions. Avec « The Beast » SANITY s’impose comme un groupe à part, avec ses fortes convictions et sa maîtrise complète des arrangements subtiles et magiques de toutes sortes. Une œuvre qui marquera les amateurs du genre mais aussi un public plus large qui découvrira ces quatre titres, tous aussi captivants que les cinq titres du précédent EP. A écouter pour ne pas passer à côté d’une pièce maîtresse de la musique Métal.
