SANITY, originally from Berlin, had an active first period between 1995 and 2002 with 3 albums. The band returned in 2013 with two members from the previous period, Florian Weishaupt, singer and guitarist in 1995, who has been singer since 2013, and Philipp Weishaupt, drummer initially, then keyboards in 2013 and drummer since 2021. Ludwig Liebsch joined the band in 2013 on bass and switched to guitar in 2021. They were joined by Julius Albe on guitar and Felix Albe on vocals, followed by Silas on bass in 2021. The six musicians worked hard on this new five-track EP, released independently on 11 February 2023. I discovered this band thanks to a new promotional campaign launched by METAL DEVASTATION RADIO.
This EP is a concept album inspired by the Bible's Book of Revelation. Throughout the five tracks, you'll discover Symphonic, Power / Metal, Black / Death oriented music with choirs and a mix of vocals that are shared between Felix, mainly for the growls and Florian, powerful clear voice, and also all other approaches ranging from growls to very high impressive notes, without neglecting the screams. The guitars are imposing and the crazy rhythm part develops an incredible energy.
We start with “Throne”, Florian's soaring vocals remind me of Alexander Osipov from IMPERIAL AGE, and he does this several times throughout the track. Felix is the Death vocalist. With vocals and solo mixed together, it's all about power and Florian is already impressing with his soaring voice. The finale is more melodious, with Death vocals and high-pitched screams.
"Scroll" is more laid-back, with an angsty atmosphere, growl vocals followed by lyrical clean vocals and a second solo in the background. Just before the halfway point, the blast beats kick in, the guitar follows, then the RHAPSODY-style clean vocals explode, alternating with the death vocals. It's scathing and impressive. It's a lovely piano solo for a musical finale.
"Seals' starts off quietly for the first 20 seconds, but the Death vocals quickly develop over a cavalcade of rhythm section over layers of keyboards, with Florian pushing his voice up into the treble. Then comes a magical moment with the highly melodic backing vocals and the Death voice. We take up the verse in a more symphonic vein and once again these majestic choirs, in this gripping melody dressed up with a soaring solo, convey real emotion. Florian's voice remains strong, and he never falters on the huge, melodic finale. What a slap in the face!
"Silence" is a musical interlude with narration by monastic choirs and a large organ.
As for the final utterly devastating track, "Trumpets", you could say we're in for an "apocalypse now", as this masterpiece in SANITY's repertoire features a whole host of dazzling musical aspects with extreme vocals - for here there are no clear voices, only fury. Musically, it's violent, with folk and bombastic passages, intense black with nasal vocals and melodic solos, all blending together in an intense but skillfully controlled general tumult. Halfway through the track, the madness is rampant and everything explodes while remaining melodic with an exceptional solo, and the musical surge continues right through to the finale. Gigantic and impressive!
You won't get away unscathed from listening to these five tracks that make up "Revelation", and you won't be able to resist listening to them again straight away. SANITY are back, and making their mark straight away with intense Symphonic Death/Black Metal music performed by six passionate musicians. This brilliant comeback is cause for celebration, and we hope that the band are working on a follow-up that's just as captivating.

SANITY, groupe Berlinois, a eu une première période d’activité entre 1995 et 2002 avec 3 albums. Le groupe s’est relancé en 2013 avec deux membres de la précédente période, Florian Weishaupt, chanteur et guitariste en 1995, passé chanteur depuis 2013 et Philipp Weishaupt, batteur initialement, puis claviers en 2013 et batteur depuis 2021. En 2013, est arrivé Ludwig Liebsch à la basse pour passer en 2021 à la guitare. Les ont rejoints ensuite Julius Albe à la guitare et Felix Albe au chant puis Silas à la basse en 2021. Six musiciens s’activent pour ce nouvel EP cinq titres, sorti en indépendant le 11.02.2023. Je découvre donc ce groupe grâce à la nouvelle promo enclenchée par METAL DEVASTATION RADIO.
Cet EP est un album concept basé sur le livre de l’Apocalypse de la Bible. Tout au long des cinq titres, on découvrira une musique Symphonique, Power / Metal, orientée Black / Death avec des chœurs et un mélange de voix qui doivent être partagées entre Felix, principalement pour les growls et Florian, voix claire puissante et aussi toutes autres approches allant des growls aux notes très aiguës impressionnantes, sans oublier les cris. Les guitares sont imposantes et la section rythmique de folie développe une énergie énorme.
On débute par « Throne » avec des envolées vocales de Florian, me faisant penser à Alexander Osipov d’IMPERIAL AGE et ce, à plusieurs reprises sur le titre. Felix est à la voix Death. Chant et solo mêlés, tout est puissance et Florian impressionne déjà avec sa voix qui s’envole dans les aigus. Le final est plus mélodique avec la voix Death et des cris aigus.
« Scroll » est plus posé dans une ambiance angoissante avec chant growl puis voix claire lyrique avec, pour un deuxième passage, solo en arrière. Un peu avant mi titre, les Blast beats se lancent, la guitare suit, puis le chant clair, dans une ambiance RHAPSODY, explose et alterne avec la voix Death. C’est décapant et impressionnant. Beau solo sur piano pour un final musical.
« Seals » début posé sur les 20 premières secondes, car rapidement la voix Death se développe sur une section rythmique en cavalcade sur nappes de claviers et Florian pousse sa voix dans les aigus. Surgit un moment magique avec des chœurs hautement mélodiques et la voix Death. On reprend le couplet en plus sympho et à nouveau ces majestueux chœurs, dans cette mélodie prenante habillée d’un solo planant, nous transmettent une réelle émotion. Florian est toujours très en voix, sans défaillir, sur le final mélodique et énorme. Une belle claque !!
« Silence » est un intermède musical avec narration sur chœurs monastiques et grand orgue.
Pour le dernier titre ravageur « Trumpets », on peut parler « d’apocalypse now » car cette pièce maîtresse, dans les réalisations de SANITY, présente plein d’aspects musicaux fulgurants avec des voix extrêmes, car ici, pas de voix claire, que de la fureur. Musicalement, c’est violent, avec des passages folkloriques et d’autres bombastiques, du black intense avec voix nasillarde et solo mélodique, tout se mélange dans un tumulte général intense mais maîtrisé habilement. A mi titre, la folie est générale et tout explose en restant mélodique avec solo exceptionnel et la déferlante musicale perdure jusqu’au final. Gigantesque et impressionnant !!
On ne sort pas indemne de l’écoute de ces cinq titres, qui composent « Revelation », qui vous marquent et vous ne pourrez pas vous empêcher de les écouter à nouveau immédiatement. SANITY revient et s’impose de suite avec une musique Symphonique Death / Black Metal intense interprétée par six musiciens passionnés. Il faut fêter ce retour brillant et souhaiter que le groupe travaille sur une suite, tout aussi captivante.
